No Pulitizer Prize for Drama This Year

Well... doesn't that just butter your bread? Nothing? Anyone know how long it's been since this happened?

Of course, the nominees weren't exactly stellar. All due respect to the writers, but it seems like the Pulitizer nominations have about as narrow a view of drama as the Tony Awards.

That being said, this is a wake up call all around. What's being produced is lowering in quality, and the attention and knowledge of the wide range of offerings is also quite narrow.

That being said, I feel like we're due for something to break on the positive side. I don't know why, just a feeling. Hope springs eternal.

I'll go on record by saying...it's ain't going to be Tarzan. Sorry Mouse.

actually, it hasn't been that long. i think the last time they didn't award a pulitzer for drama was the year Wynton Marsalis won for music for his Oratorio... it might have been the year right after RENT...

then there was all this "Death of the Theater" mishegas in the press...

I wonder... will we have that again or will anyone else reach the conclusion that perhaps the Pulitzer committee wasn't looking in the right places?

I'm going back through the winners on the Pulitzer site now -- unfortunately, when I simply try to get a list of Drama winners from 1917 to the present I get a "server error" notice. So I'm having to check the winners year by year.

So far, looking back to 1950, "No Award" took it in 1997 (yes, the year after RENT, as Isaac notes), in 1986, in 1974, 1972, 1968, 1966, 1964, 1963, and in 1951.

So, not a huge oddity (I noticed a few other "No Awards" in other categories over the years, too).

I wonder what now-classic works we might find if we looked back at those years?
